Four members of the Mississauga Monarchs under-19 girls AAA basketball have signed scholarships with Canadian colleges or universities next season!!

Guard Caitlin MacLeod signed with the University of Waterloo, centre Sasha Samardzija signed with the University of Western Ontario, centre/forward Batoul Kababji signed with St. Mary's University and guard/forward Hayley Tamo signed with Niagara College!!

Monarchs coach Steve Rogers said its a rare achievement for four players from one Ontario girls basketball club to earn scholarships.

"If you look at the top eight teams in U-19 AAA, that's about 95 kids," Rogers explained. "There might be nine or 10 kids that get scholarships and I've got four of them. It just doesn't happen often."

MacLeod, Samardzija, Kababji and Tamo have been playing together for the past six seasons.

Rogers said co-coach Trish Berringer-MacLeod has been key to their development. When they started with the Monarchs, Mississauga was ranked 46th in the province and climbed up to second this past season!

Rogers said each girl is dedicated to both school and basketball.

"They all have over 80 averages and a lot of kids need to realize that if you want to play, you have to do well in the classroom," he said. "Any coach in Canada will not look at a kid unless they have a mark over 80."
