The Mississauga Monarchs major atom boys' basketball team shocked a lot of people at its home tournament last weekend (Feb. 17-19).
Entered as the No. 6 seed in the Ontario Basketball Association-sanctioned tournament, the Monarchs won the AAA division with a 76-63 victory over No. 2 Scarborough Blues on Sunday night at Cawthra Park Secondary School.
"We were definitely the underdogs, that's for sure," said team manager David McKee. "I know the kids have talent, but the challenge is getting that consistency from beginning to end. There wasn't one game where we let up."
Earlier on Sunday, the Monarchs defeated No. 5 YAAACE (Youth Association for Academics, Athletics and Character Education) from Toronto 49-41 to advance to the final of the 10-team tourney.
In round-robin play, the Monarchs downed Hamilton's Blessed Sacrament (No. 7) 60-47, North York's Fire Basketball (No. 10) 49-39 and Scarborough Blues 74-66 while losing 75-71 to Toronto's CIA Bounce (No. 3).
Members of the Monarchs are Karol Kolodziejek, Zachery McKee, Tyren Mananquil, Joshua Noton, R.J. Smith, Jaylen Passley, Kevin Ly, Jaidis Brooks, Nathan San Miguel, Joshua Emerling, Joshua Poozhikala, head coach Jamie Rusynyk, assistant coach Dimitri Noton and trainer Mark Passley.
The Monarchs also fielded a squad in the eight-team AA portion of the tournament, but didn't make it past the round-robin.
